Communities everywhere rely on banks to provide the means for life and business to thrive. More than most, small rural and regional communities are hit hard when the bank leaves town. Bendigo Bank developed its Community Bank model in response to these closures; to support disenfranchised communities through the provision of banking services, to help communities better manage locally generated capital, providing local employment for staff and service providers, and to enable communities to share in revenues generated by their Community Bank enterprise.
We believe that communities can be transformed by the human values of the people within. We stand for helping those communities – through the profits generated from our Community Bank franchise we provide the seed capital for a project or the small assistance needed to achieve improvement or change and to flourish.
Our Community Investments support kindergartens, schools and Universities, sporting clubs, service organizations, CFAs , Municipal Councils, philanthropic bodies, Men’s Sheds etc.
We are a community owned public company, established in 2009 when 230 Buninyong & District community members subscribed their own money to raise the working capital to start the Community Bank Branch.
A board of voluntary directors oversees the business strategy and community investment. Directors have no involvement with the banking operations undertaken at the Community Bank Branch.
The Community Bank Branch operates as a franchise of Bendigo Bank. Bendigo provides its range of branded financial products and services, supports the staff with training, accreditation and management systems, provides treasury and IT system services etc. As deposits are with Bendigo Bank, they have the benefit of the Australian Government guarantee on deposits.
